like any red-blooded filipina, i enjoy fine clothing. i look for quality, invention, imagination and cleverness. monique lhuillier delivered the goods for fall 2009.
not all the dresses are hits. some are misses. in fact, one [red crinoline] is a foul ball. and the suits are a tad prim for my taste, but lovely nonetheless. even in the lushly paneled interior the assembled models resemble an all evita peron army waiting for the firing squad. a bit eerie.
my favorite bit? the really clever “arm hosiery” [my term] she uses under the gowns and dresses. in my world, that’s bliss: don’t have to worry about the “hi helens!” and chubby arms flapping about–they have support in this new lhuillier dress scheme. very sheer, irregularly striped, with a thumb loop, they are conceptually technical athletic gear. the end result is miles away…in the land of very sexy arms, shoulders and wrists…harkening back to the days of arm length gloves. all the glamour, with a great deal more comfort and far less fussiness. the favorite of this group is the black gown with very sexy cutouts underneath the shoulders, baring skin to the hips. some hollywood type is sure to feature this gown for a red carpet appearance.
