this is probably one of the most creative dance scenes in all of film history. i know there are lots from fred astaire, and yeah, those are fantastic. i love ’em. but this is a masterpiece within a masterpiece. watch gene kelly give such life and movement to toulouse lautrec’s at the moulin rouge [including a composite of other lautrec drawings and paintings.]
of course astaire had the grace and imagination of a dozen people. but kelly had all that and more…and that bit of “extra” is what makes this clip an eternal work of art. that extra bit is athleticism…the man was as fit as any contemporary power dancer. mix that with creativity, and well, just watch this snippet from an american in paris:
